Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should have acquired a general insight into how terrorism has evolved from a historical perspective. Furthermore the student should be able to illustrate how the concept of terrorism is used differently according to various settings. Also, the student should be able to account for the different types of terrorism. Finally, the student should have knowledge of the major theories that analyze and explain the phenomenon of terrorism from different perspectives.

Course Content

The course illustrates terrorism primarily from two overarching perspectives. First, terrorism is illustrated from the perspective of great power politics where factors such as the end of the Cold War, globalization and nationalism will be analysed. Second, the focus will be to discuss whether terrorism is a phenomenon that is based on the struggle between civilizations and cultures or is better explained from traditional aspects such as power, economy and resources.

Assessment

One take-home examination, one written assignment and active participation of the student during the seminars.

The number of examinations is limited to five. The course is included in the course package International Relations I. The course replaces SKA040, SKA041 and SK1021.
