Core Areas of Applied English Linguistics

On completion of the course, the students shall be able to:

• demonstrate critical understanding of the history and development of Applied Linguistics by taking a critical approach to the diverse theoretical orientations that have had an impact on the area
• demonstrate critical understanding of key terms and concepts in Applied Linguistics and ability to use them
• critically examine the role of English in contexts that are relevant to Applied Linguistics and, more specifically, show an understanding of the role of Applied Linguistics in meeting the diverse communication needs of various groups of people using English
• communicate ideas, develop arguments and discuss academic work, showing a high level of communicative competence in both written and spoken academic English.

The course offers an overview of Applied Linguistics, seen from the perspective of the English language. The course is divided into two modules.
The Nature of Applied Linguistics, covers definitions and disagreements in Applied Linguistics, in addition to outlining the main historical developments of the area.
The Role of English, deals with the implications of the global spread of English, focusing on notions such as English as a Lingua Franca and World Englishes.

The course is examined through continuous assessment of written assignments and prepared and active seminar participation.

The course is taught in the form of lectures and obligatory seminars. All teaching is conducted in English.

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To achieve the grade VG on the course as a whole, VGs are required on both modules.
