Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, the students shall be able to:

  • demonstrate insight into and a deepened understanding of the selected areas in Applied Linguistics and the predominant theories, methods and controversies connected with these
  • demonstrate analytical ability to apply and critically examine key terms and concepts in Applied Linguistics
  • demonstrate an understanding of and critically examine key applications of Applied Linguistics, especially those that are driven by technology, such as in Computer-Assisted Language Learning and corpus linguistics
  • identify and critically assess current sources in the form of influential bodies of research and policy in Applied Linguistics (such as professional organisations and international journals)
  • communicate ideas, develop arguments and discuss academic work, showing a high level of communicative competence in both written and spoken academic English.

Course Content

The course builds on the course Core Areas of Applied English Linguistics and offers a more in-depth view of Applied Linguistics, seen from the perspective of the English language. The course is divided into two modules. Traditional Areas in Applied Linguistics, covers a selection of essential areas of enquiry in some depth, focusing on Second Language Acquisition, English for Specific Purposes, Discourse Analysis and Sociolinguistics. Dynamic Areas in Applied Linguistics, brings up subfields and concepts that are especially influential and topical, such as Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), genre analysis and learner corpora. The topics will vary to some extent, depending on the expertise of the teachers on the course and the specific interests of the students. An additional function of this module is to provide input for the students’ future degree thesis projects and to help students connect with recent developments in the area.

Assessment

The course is examined through continuous assessment of written and spoken assignments and prepared and active seminar participation.

Forms of Study

The course is taught in the form of lectures and obligatory seminars. All teaching is conducted in English.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To achieve the grade VG on the course as a whole, VGs are required on both modules.

Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Traditional Areas in Applied Linguistics - 5 cr
Module 2: Dynamic Areas in Applied Linguistics - 2.5 cr

Prerequisites

  • 90 credits in English including 30 credits at First cycle level 2. Furthermore proficiency in English documented by one of the following international proficiency test is required: a TOEFL test including TWE with a minimum of 630 (paper) 267 (computer) or 109 (Internet); a Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency with an A or B grade; an IELTS test with a minimum of 7.5 (and no module under 7)
