  • use a basic vocabulary on familiar topics
  • recognise the different diacritics and simple grammatical constructions and use them orally and in writing
  • describe the contents of and write simple texts on familiar topics
  • discuss Portuguese language structure contrasting with English and/or Swedish.

Course Content

The course focuses on basic language proficiency corresponding to level A1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. By engaging in a variety of different exercises in listening comprehension and speaking as well as by reading and writing simple texts, students develop their ability to interact orally and in writing in Portuguese on familiar topics. Emphasis is also put on building an active vocabulary and an understanding of the pronunciation system. Grammar and language structure are analysed from a contrastive perspective in relation to Swedish and English in order to build up the mastery of the form and syntax of Portuguese. The selection of texts used in the course introduces students to different aspects of Portuguese-speaking cultures.
