Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students shall be able to:
- understand familiar topics in Chinese spoken at a normal pace
- converse with native speakers of Chinese using accurate tones on familiar topics
- understand approximately 750 Chinese characters
- master approximately 100 sentence structures in Chinese
- read and write short texts on familiar topics without the aid of Pinyin.
Course Content
The course comprises six modules that build on each other. The different parts of listening, speaking, reading and writing, are, to a large extent, integrated with each other. The course includes speaking and listening exercises to help students develop their communicative abilities. Activities include listening to text recordings, watching video clips, dictations, pronunciation exercises, and sentence structure exercises. By studying a large number of characters and doing grammatical exercises, students develop their written and receptive abilities. In the course, students practice building sentences in shorter texts in Chinese.
Assessment
Continuous assessment of active participation in seminars and written assignments, as well as a final oral examination and a final written examination.
Forms of Study
Chinese is used as the language of tuition, supported by English or Swedish. Teaching is done in the form of obligatory seminars.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
To achieve the grade of VG for the whole course, VG is required for at least 9 credits, including modules 5 and 6.

- A minimum of 30 credits in Chinese at undergraduate level
