Japanese III: Language Proficiency

After completing this course, students will, in modern Japanese, be able to:

• with some ease, read texts in which intermediate level grammar, vocabulary and kanji are used, and retell their contents
• carry out ordinary conversation in Japanese by utilizing expressions on a level necessary for daily communication about familiar topics
• give short prepared presentations on various familiar topics
• express their opinions on such topics and discuss the opinions of others
• organize and lead class projects
• analyze the grammatical structure of intermediate level texts and use these structures in writing
• describe some common aspects of contemporary Japanese society and everyday culture.

In this course the students practice making short presentations and discuss these in Japanese. They also practice debating different familiar topics and thereby increase their vocabulary within relevant subject areas. Through the study and discussion of intermediate texts and through work with short writing tasks, students deepen their knowledge of modern Japanese grammar.

The course is examined continuously. Students‘ oral ability is evaluated by their class performance and their writing ability by regular writing tasks and a final written test. The student projects which are presented both orally and in writing are also part of the examination.

Japanese is used as the language of tuition, with English as support language. Teaching is done in the form of seminars, group exercises, several student projects and various online activities.

To receive the grade of VG on the whole course, VG is required on both modules.
