Dalarna University is expanding – 18 percent more students

Dalarna University experienced significant growth in 2024, with an 18 percent increase in student numbers and strengthened financial stability. The university now has 17,430 registered students.

Dalarna University saw positive developments in 2024 with clear growth in the number of students and improved financial stability. After a year of strategic measures to increase the volume of education, the university now has 17 430 registered students, which marks an increase of 18 percent compared with 2023. This growth has mainly been in the university’s distance courses and programmes and its freestanding courses.

"We saw good economic development in 2024, which means good opportunities to build a sustainable economy for the future. It is gratifying that our work to strengthen our range of courses and programmes has delivered results," says Jörgen Elbe, Vice-Chancellor of Dalarna University.

Campus Borlänge and the growth of distance education

Last year, the new campus in central Borlänge was inaugurated: it offers a modern and effective teaching and learning environment for staff and students. At the same time, there has been an increase in the number of distance students and the range of distance courses and programmes.

"The new Campus Borlänge has been positive for Dalarna University as an attractive place of study, and we see a great deal of continued interest in distance education and flexible forms of study. We are in a unique position in Sweden with our strong digital learning environment and our range of relevant and exciting courses and programmes," says Jörgen Elbe.

· Proportion of distance students: 81 % (+25 %)

· Number of degrees awarded: 1 454 (+2.5 %)

· Average age: 32 years (unchanged)
