PROACTIVE: Preventive Parenting Intervention to Promote Health Equity for Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Groups

Parenting support programs are well-situated to address the needs of immigrant parents and their children. Despite these benefits, programs often struggle to reach and engage them. Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) is an arena not associated with stigma, and we can reach it with these programs.

Description

The overall purpose of this project is to investigate the effectiveness of the ICDP in SFI schools and to perform a process evaluation of the implementation strategy. Specifically, the project will provide insight and empirical evidence whether the ICDP can promote mental health of parents and children, a sense of competence in parenting, and social inclusion. To prepare for scale up the project will also closely evaluate the strategy used to support the implementation of the ICDP in SFI settings.

The parenting support program International Child Development Program (ICDP) (Vägledande Samspel in Swedish) was chosen to be implemented in Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) classes in the municipality as an early intervention to promote health equity and civic literacy. ICDP is a relationship-oriented and empathy-based program that is used as health promotion and prevention intervention.

This is a multi-center project which uses a hybrid study approach. The project will employ both quantitative methods using stepped-wedge design and qualitative methods using interviews, focus group discussions, field notes and participant observation.

This project is highly relevant for tackling health inequality in society and equipping the most disadvantaged groups with preventive parenting intervention that would assist their integration into society, strengthen their sense of competence in parenting, and improve the mental health of parents and children.
