This project focuses on the early development of towns and in particularly the mining town Falun, in central Sweden. Towns and the early formation of proto-towns in Scandinavia, has long been focused on through historical and archaeological research. But the interest is also growing within the geo- and environmental archaeology field and in Europe the numbers of investigations have increased during the last 30 years. The numbers of investigations are growing in Scandinavia since the last 15 years. The formation of proto-towns and towns also mean an increasing influence on the environment – both in and around the town. This project focus on the identification of the development of the growing town Falun, not defined from a juridical, social or economical view but from the environmental point of view. The attempt is to identify a different definition of the concept town or the earlier stage proto-town. The project is a pilot study to explore the resources available today; Falun is also subject to many environmental protection studies because of the large amount of mining trash in the ground. Therefore there is more information to collect than just traditional archaeological and environmental studies. The pilot study focus on earlier archaeological excavation reports, earlier results from coring in and around the town Falun.
