Addiction and self-harm are serious problems where more research is needed. Previous research has established knowledge about factors related to the onset and context in which this takes place. There is still a lack of knowledge about the causal mechanisms underlying substance abuse and self-harm. This study aims to investigate the relationships between childhood factors, gender roles and emotions activated in the context of substance abuse and self-harm behaviours. The analysis will contribute to a typology of different types of interactions between factors that contribute to and counteract the occurrence of substance abuse and self-harm behaviours. Research on learning, gender and emotions forms the theoretical antecedents for the selection of themes in the study. Objective. To arrive at rich and authentic case descriptions of the interplay between mechanisms leading to youths' harmful behaviors and "tipping points" where counteracting factors lead to rehabilitation. To link these case descriptions to theories in the field that can explain the expected variation in case descriptions. A typology should provide an overview of different types of mechanisms and outcomes.The study has a narrative approach. The main method of analysis will be content analysis with a thematic control. The method provides access to the biographical experiences of individuals and forms the basis for the formulation of the mechanisms that preceded the current status of young people. The population was drawn from substance abuse treatment centers. The research has been tested in EPN as special care must be taken not to allow the research to negatively affect the participants.Expected results. The study will result in rich case descriptions and a typological overview of the cases included in the study. The knowledge of the individual cases can contribute to the development of treatment methods adapted to the characteristics of individuals. Data collection completed 221330.
