Almost every industry will need more energy in the future. For the transition to be possible, there needs to be a secure supply that meets demands. Dalarna University is involved in development projects that aim to bring about the energy transition in Dalarna.
Examples of Development Projects
The Energy System of the Future
Energy System Roadmap (in brief): The roadmap aims to develop and secure future energy in Dalarna (Energy System Roadmap). The goal of this is to achieve national energy and climate goals by 2045. The roadmap includes energy production, distribution, and system issues, with contributions from energy companies, Dalarna University, Dalarna County Administrative Board, and Region Dalarna.
Project Timeframe: The project began with the adoption of Dalarna's climate and energy strategy in 2019; in autumn 2022, the Energy System Roadmap was adopted.
Funding: The project receives funding from regional energy companies in collaboration with Dalarna University, the County Administrative Board of Dalarna, and Region Dalarna.
The Process – the Journey to a Roadmap: Workshops that focus on discussion about the most important aspects of a future regional energy system. The roadmap is an interactive image and was discussed at a conference in Falun in September 2022. This was attended by energy companies, other business representatives, and students from Dalarna University.
Discussions about a new roadmap for energy systems, which will lead to a workshop: Energy Intelligent Dalarna (not available in English)
Benefits and Results: The roadmap was formally adopted by Dalarna's Energy and Climate Council and is now available in published form as an interactive image. The roadmap will pave the way towards a stable, sustainable, and future-proof energy system, which is crucial for all companies and residents in Dalarna. It will also facilitate strategic decisions and priorities for energy system stakeholders and potentially lead to the development of new products and services.

"The goal is for real change and for the active contribution of Dalarna to the national energy and climate goals."
The Start of the Journey Towards the Energy System of the Future
In autumn 2022, a roadmap for the energy system in Dalarna was adopted that points out what needs to be done by 2045 if we are to help achieve national energy and climate goals. The roadmap was drawn up by regional energy companies in collaboration with Dalarna University, the County Administrative Board of Dalarna, and Region Dalarna.
"All companies in Dalarna rely on a stable, sustainable, and future-proof energy system. Throughout the process, our work has involved additional stakeholders who are part of the energy system in Dalarna: for example, energy users and energy producers, who have also expressed their views on how the future energy system should be designed. Throughout the work, there has been a systems mindset where it is important to capture how, for example, property owners and industries in Dalarna view their role in the energy system," says Malin Karlsson.
The roadmap covers the production and distribution of energy, as well as system issues relating to the area. It contains a vision for the upcoming year, four sub-goals, and nine priority areas that in different ways work to achieve the defined goals.
"This is a unique opportunity for energy companies in Dalarna to join forces and take a leading role in the work with issues and thus shape the future energy system. The fact that we also have had close contact and dialogue with the County Administrative Board of Dalarna, Region Dalarna, and Dalarna University is also valuable and important," says Malin Karlsson, who is the process manager in the roadmap work at Dalarna University.
The energy system is one of seven areas that have been identified as important to the achievement of an energy-intelligent and climate-smart Dalarna by 2045. At its core is Dalarna's climate and energy strategy, which was completed in 2019.
"The goal of the roadmap work is to create real change and for Dalarna to actively contribute to the national energy and climate goals. By developing roadmaps, we intend to make it easier for stakeholders in Dalarna's energy system to make strategic decisions and prioritise correctly," says Malin Karlsson.
A developed and future-proof energy system is very important for everyone who lives and works in the region. In the long term, new products and services may be developed that better suit market needs.
