Assessment and Exams

Students are assessed on what they have learnt in a course. What form of assessment is used in a particular course can vary. You may have to take an invigilated (supervised) exam on campus, complete a practical exam in a lab, write a report at home or complete a placement.

Instructions and Rules

Your course syllabus states the requirements for your course. You can often find more detailed information on Canvas, the learning platform. Instructions about assessment specify whether or not you are permitted to use aids during an exam (and will specify what these are), whether you need to use a specific template for a report, and whether you are to complete an assessed assignment on your own or in a group. Be sure to find out what applies each time you register for an exam.

Be sure to read the instructions and also to read Dalarna University's general examination rules.

Forms of Assessment

Assessment can be conducted in several ways. Here are some of the most common:

  • Take-home exam - this comprises one or more written assignments that you complete using course literature over a set period (i.e., with a start date and a deadline)
  • Seminar - assessment in groups that includes discussion and reflection on course literature, your own work or your peers' work
  • Labs - a practical assignment/experiment, the process and completion of which are important components
  • Placement (VFU) - a form of assessment where you have the opportunity to train and be assessed on practical tasks and work processes relevant to your future profession

Exams on Campus

The student web shows you where your exam will be held.

You need to be in the room at the latest 30 minutes before the exam starts. If you are not in the room ten minutes before the exam is scheduled to start, you will be unable to start the exam. Instead, you will need to wait with other late students and together you will be let into the exam 30 minutes after the start time. This means you will have less time to complete the exam.

Digital Exams on Campus

The student web tells you where your exam will be held.

You should be in the room at the latest 30 minutes before the exam starts. If you are not in the room ten minutes before the exam is scheduled to start, you will be unable to take the exam. You will need your username and password to your university account to log into Inspera.

For exams in Canvas, you need to check ahead of the exam date that your laptop computer can connect to Eduroam at the university and that you can access the course room in Canvas. If you have problems, contact the support café/reception for help.

Online Exams

In Canvas, you can find the room for your exam. You need to be in the room on Zoom no later than 30 minutes before the start of the exam. If you arrive later than this, there is no guarantee you will receive all the time for the exam. If you are not in the room 10 minutes before the exam starts, you will not be able to take the exam.

Grading and Assessment

When you complete an assessment component, the teacher in charge will assess your performance. Normally, the teacher or examiner has up to 15 days to assess your work and report the results in Ladok.

If you feel your grade does not accurately reflect the assessment criteria, you may request a review of your grade.
