English: Literature and Theory

On completion of the course students will be able to:

  • discuss, in a nuanced manner, theories that have had a shaping effect on the academic study of literature
  • reflect upon and problematise the assumptions and ambitions of those theories
  • describe a nuanced and careful critical reading of literary and theoretical texts in English, based on principles of literary and scientific analysis
  • present coherent interpretations of literary works in English, based on modern theories within the field
  • reflect upon disciplinary debates over literary theory and the state of the field
  • communicate and argue for their own interpretations of literary as well as critical and theoretical texts, in clear, correct and appropriate academic English, orally and in writing.

Surf on the Internet, read and send emails, use a word-processing programme (e.g. Word). Connect a camera and headphones to the computer and install a programme using instructions.

Computer Capacity:

Access to a computer (Not a mini pc, tablet or similar) that is not older than three years (or equivalent) and broadband connection, at least 1 Mbit/s (not mobile broadband, because mobile broadband can vary considerably in speed).

Means of Education:

Higher rate of web-based communication where our learning platform (Learn/Canvas) is a natural element of the course. Web-based meetings with sound and image where simple presentations can be held. Lectures can be broadcast live or can alternatively be made available afterwards online.
