The French-Speaking World: Literature, Culture and Translation

On completion of the course, the students shall, in French, be able to:

• apply inter- and transcultural perspectives on literature from the French-speaking world
• in their own text analyse and discuss how literature from the French-speaking world meets readers from France
• in their own text analyse and discuss how literature from the French-speaking world in translated form meets readers from other linguistic areas
• apply key perspectives in translation theory as well as reflect on how social and cultural contexts affect translation practices.

The course presents inter- and transcultural perspectives on literature from the French-speaking world. Aspects such as hybridity, migration and Métissage are treated in relation to the literature studied. The course also includes translation and reception theories, with special focus on literature from the French-speaking world.

The course is examined by continuous assessment of active participation in seminars and forum discussions, written assignments as well as oral presentations. Students also write two independent written works in the form of a shorter literary analysis plus one translation-oriented study. The works are defended at a seminar.

The course is given in the form of lectures, obligatory seminars and forum discussions.

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To receive the grade of VG for the whole course, VG is required on both modules.
