Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- in a critical manner discuss some of the most important translation theories
- analyse various styles of Japanese
- demonstrate an advanced ability to use various translation techniques
- analyse various aspects of Japanese language register and narrative
- evaluate the quality of a translation.
Course Content
In the course, the theoretical aspects of translation studies and the practice of actual translation are covered, with emphasis on practice. In the theoretical part, some of the most important theories and research methods in translation studies are studied. In the practical part, students translate short excerpts from documents from various genres, mainly from Japanese into English. In addition to the feedback from the teacher, students practice how to discuss their own translations as well as those of others in order to acquire a critical approach in their work with others.

Grades
The grading scale used for the final course grade is A–F.
The final grade for the course is based on an overall assessment by the examiner.
Grades are reported as follows:
- Seminars and written assignments - 11 Credits | A–F
- Written examinations - 4 Credits | A–F

- Japanese IV: Introduction to Translation, 15 credits
Other Information
This course is a continuation of the course Japanese IV: Introduction to Translation.
This course overlaps the previous course code AJP27X and the course Japanese V: Practical Translation, 15 credits.
This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
