Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate detailed knowledge of Arabic grammar rules and syntax and be able to apply them in speech and writing
  • make grammatical analyses in Arabic
  • conduct varied conversations in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)
  • discuss news articles and literary texts in MSA
  • translate different types of texts, such as articles, poems, and prose to and from Arabic
  • discuss the content of songs and films in MSA
  • make short presentations in MSA
  • account for the foundations of a literary analyses
  • account briefly for the development of Arabic poetry.

Course Content

The course is built around three modules. The modules Grammar and texts and Oral proficiency are studied together and the module The development of Arabic poetry is studied individually. During the course the student study different types of texts such as short stories, poems, articles and news. The literary texts are studied through basic literary analyses. The students also watch short films and reports in MSA which are then discussed in groups. During the course the student complete two individual projects around literary texts. The student work with grammar in connection to the texts but also individually in grammatical analyses where the students both identify grammatical problems and solve already given problems. The students practice their knowledge of grammar through the use of end vowels when writing. In the module The development of Arabic poetry the role of poetry in Arabic society and how it has changed over the centuries is studied through lectures and articles.

Assessment

Grades for the Grammar and texts module are based on continuous assessment of assignments and class participation, two written projects and an oral and a written exam.
Grades for the Oral proficiency module are based on continuous assessment of active class participation throughout the course and on a final oral exam.
The module The development of Arabic poetry is examined through a written assignment.
Great weight is placed on deadlines, and assignments handed in late are only awarded G at most.

Forms of Study

Arabic is used as the teaching language, with Swedish or English as support languages. The material in the module The development of Arabic poetry is in English and Arabic. Seminars are the main activity for the course and students are expected to participate actively. A number of tasks require the ability to cooperate with other participants. During the course the students carry out two projects and write a report.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To receive the grade of VG for the whole course VG is required onthe two modules Grammar and Text and Oral Proficiency.
