Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- show a deepened knowledge of a selection of political, social and economic features of African societies since the early 19th century
- demonstrate the ability to analyse issues of continuity and change in African societies
- demonstrate an understanding of synchronic and diachronic approaches to the study of African societies and to the study of the relationship between Europe and Africa over time.
Course Content
In the course synchronic and diachronic approaches to African societies from the early 1800s to the present are studied. The main subjects to be takenup in the course are the structure of African economies; the principles of political organization; the links between the individual and the collective; the natural resource base; and the production and reproduction of material culture in different African cultures.
Assessment
Students are assessed through active participation in seminars, the presentation of research reviews and written work.
Forms of Study
Teaching is conducted in the form of lectures and seminars. The course involves interdisciplinary approaches and methods to describe and analyse the dynamics and structure of African societies. All teaching is in English.
Grades
The Swedish grades A–F.
Prerequisites
- 60 credits in the field of Humanities, Social Sciences or Education and English 6. No knowledge of Swedish is required
