Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- demonstrate an in-depth understanding of fundamental conditions for education policies and for the role of education in the development of African societies
- explain and analyse issues of education policies with particular relevance for African conditions
- critically and independently analyse relationships between global processes and social change in African societies.
Course Content
The course deals with education policies and the role of education in the development of African societies. The focus is on the relationship between education and social change. Indigenous knowledge and learning systems are discussed in relation to formal and structured education systems. The role of international aid in education for development in African societies will be discussed as well as questions related to professional ethics and to the role of official curricula.
Assessment
Students are assessed by active participation during seminars and written assignments.
Forms of Study
Teaching is conducted in the form of lectures and seminars. All teaching is in English.
Grades
The Swedish grades A–F.
Prerequisites
- Bachelor Degree of 180 credits in the field of Humanities, Social Sciences or Education and English 6
