Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student shall be able to:

  • critically reflect on, assess and discuss different theories of economic development and under-development in Africa south of the Sahara
  • independently analyze and problematize different approaches which appear in the theoretical discussion about economic development, as well as be able to write a comparative report on the results of this analysis.

Course Content

The course focuses on the social and economic conditions that have characterized Africa in recent decades within a global context. Central issues in the course are different theories of development and the way in which they have changed over time as well as different explanations to Africa’s economic development over the past decades.

Assessment

Assessment for this course consists of written examinations.

Forms of Study

The student shall work with the literature of the course and write an individual report based on the literature. All teaching is in English.

Grades

The Swedish grades A–F.

Prerequisites

  • Bachelor Degree of 180 credits in the field of Humanities, Social Sciences or Education and English 6. No knowledge of Swedish is required.
