Learning Outcomes

The overall aim of the course is for the student to understand the procedures and processes of complicated pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care. The student shall be able to conduct examinations and provide treatments related to these processes in simulation-based training based on research and midwifery scope of practice.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • perform examinations and treatment in pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period in simulation-based training
  • reflect critically on the midwife´s role and responsibilities in relation to pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, including neonatal care
  • explain and reflect on health concepts regarding complicated pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period including neonatal care
  • analyze and reflect on management related to pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care within midwifery scope of practice
  • understand and explain how pharmacological treatments and other interventions can influence pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.

Course Content

The course comprises reflection, discussion, and problematizing of processes in handling complicated pregnancy, delivery and postpartum care. Further study on circumstances when psycho-social aspects amplify and aggravate parenthood. Deepen knowledge and skills in examination methods, treatment and documentation are practiced. Deepen knowledge of non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment in relation to pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum care.

Assessment

Examinations are written individual exam, seminars with reports and simulation-based training.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–G.

Number of credits:

  • Individual examination, 3 credits
  • Seminar, 1.5 credits
  • Simulation based training, 1.5 credits

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Individual examination - 3 Credits | U–G
  • Seminar - 1.5 Credits | U–G
  • Clinical Exam - 1.5 Credits | U–G

Entry Requirements

  • A Swedish nursing licence, and a completed Bachelor‘s degree in any major in the health sciences and Thesis 15 credits

Other Information

Part of Postgraduate Programme in Midwifery 90 Credits. The course partially corresponds with SR3010.

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
