Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, the student shall:
  • reflect on disabilities in relation to eating and quality of life and apply a person centred approach to support eating and mealtimes
  • analyse and evaluate complex issues related to eating and nutrition based on a professional perspective, taking into account evidence based and ethical approaches
  • critically discuss measuring instruments for various functional impairments associated with eating and nutrition
  • critically evaluate evidence within a field of research to argue for improvement when it comes to eating
  • critically discuss the responsibility of the nurse to initiate and work for collaboration with other staff.

Course Content

  • nutritional physiology, diet and dietary supplement
  • risk identification and measures related to the risk of malnutrition
  • eating disorders caused by, for example, dysphagia
  • analysis and evaluation of measuring instruments that are useful for the nurse’s
  • assessment of nursing and activity
  • enteral and parenteral nutrition
  • meal environment and culture

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–G.

The Swedish grades U - G
Score Reporting:
  • Seminars, 3 credits
  • Individual report, 4.5 credits

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Seminars - 3 Credits | U–G
  • Individual written exam - 4.5 Credits | U–G

Prerequisites

  • By the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare issued Registered Nurse and Bachelor Degree in nursing, or a minimum of 180 credits with at least 90 credits in nursing science which 15 credits comprise a thesis

Other Information

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
