  • discuss different ways in which contextual factors may affect the discourse and generalize about how typical forms of speech and writing differ based on context
  • account for the typical features of spoken interaction and interpret utterances by referring to principles of conversation
  • identify what the characteristic features are of specific types of text, applying knowledge about genre and taking into consideration the social context in which the text is used
  • carry out a delimited research project on a sample of authentic discourse in English and present it orally and in writing, showing a high level of communicative competence.

Course Content

What are the fundamental principles that we follow when we communicate? How do speech and writing differ? In what ways do various aspects of the context affect people’s language use? These are the core questions addressed in this course on discourse analysis focusing on English. Exploring a variety of approaches to discourse, students will study language beyond the sentence level and analyze how it is used for specific purposes in naturally-occurring discourse.

Assessment
