Academic writing and speaking in English

After completed course the doctoral student should be able to:

• demonstrate familiarity with two selected main types of academic writing, the doctoral thesis and the research article
• demonstrate knowledge of genre analysis with respect to the communicative functions and the organization of key elements of research writing in Educational Work and other neighboring areas of research
• analyze the structure and rhetorical features of a spoken conference presentation, as well as to plan and give their own spoken presentation
• critically evaluate the scholarly work of others by pointing out strengths as well as weaknesses in the form of constructive response
• communicate ideas, develop arguments and discuss academic work, showing a high level of communicative competence in both written and spoken academic English.

In the course the students study different forms of academic writing and speaking from the perspectives of genre analysis and texts’ different structures and functions. Besides genres like the doctoral thesis and the research article, the course also deals with oral communication and research presentations in academic English. In the course the students also conduct various types of text analyses in which the language use of different institutional educational practices are investigated. During the course the students further develop their skills in using digital tools for academic writing and speaking in English.

The course is examined through continuous assessment of written and spoken assignments and prepared and active seminar participation.

The course is taught in the form of lectures and obligatory seminars.

The Swedish grades U–G.

All teaching is conducted in English, including oral and written assessments.
