Upon completion of the course, the doctoral student shall be able to:
Knowledge and understanding:
- demonstrate familiarity with central concepts in philosophy of science and different theories in philosophy of science
- explain the epistemological and philosophical basis for methodological choices made in the students chosen PhD research project
- demonstrate familiarity with open science
Skills and abilities
- construct a consistent search strategy for a specific aim
- construct a data management plan
Judgement and approach
- assess isues related to research ethics in various study designs and relate to Swedish laws, regulations and guidelines concerning research ethics and the integrity of the researcher
- elaborate on the ethical responsibility of the researcher and ethical aspects in relation to chosen planned thesis including the perspective of data management and associated laws and regulations
Course Content
The course contains different perspectives of knowledge. The first module addresses what knowledge is from epistemological and philosophical perspectives. In the second module knowledge is illuminated from the perspective of knowledge acquisition and the last module puts knowledge in relation to ethics and legislation.
Module 1: Philosophy of science and knowledge, 3.5 credits
Module 2: Information literacy 0.5 credits
Module 3: Research ethics, integrity of the researcher and open science, 3.5 credits

To receive Pass (G) in the course, the student must receive Pass (G) in all modules.
Prerequisites
- To be admitted, applicants must meet the general entry requirements for doctoral studies. Persons who have not been admitted to a doctoral programme at Dalarna University are admitted to the course depending on space availability.
