Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- describe the most important poets of Arabic poetry from the 20th and 21st centuries
- explain the more central genres, movements and trends in Arabic poetry from the 20th and 21st centuries in translation
- discuss the emergence of genres and styles during this period and connect these to historical and political events
- explain the prominent role of poetry in Arab society
- analyse a selection of poems using theoretical models.
Course Content
The course presents a number of poets who were active in the Arabic-speaking world throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. With a basis in their poetry, the rise of modern Arabic poetry, the break with the classical tradition and contemporary Arabic poetry are discussed. The course introduces theoretical models for the analysis of poetry, and these are applied to a selection of poems.
Assessment
Continuous examination by way of an assessment of active participation in seminars, written assignments and a final written examination.
Forms of Study
The course is taught through lectures and seminars in which students must participate actively. The language of instruction is either Arabic or English.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
Prerequisites
- Arabic V, 15 credits at First cycle
- No knowledge of Swedish is required.
