Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the student should be able to:
- account for some of the most important Arab writers from the 20th and 21st centuries and their influence on the modern Arabic literature
- account briefly for the most important genres, movements and trends in Arabic literature during the 20th and 21st centuries
- compare the different styles and movements studied during the course and discuss reasons for their influence on the literature
- account briefly for how social changes in the Arab world have influenced the modern Arabic literature.
Course Content
The course is an introduction to the modern Arabic literature, its origins and development. During the course the students will read some of the most influential authors and poets from the last 150 years. Their influence on the literature is discussed in addition to the impact of the changes of Arab societies on the development of the literature.
Assessment
The course will be continuously assessed throughout the course orally and in writing in addition to a final written essay.
Forms of Study
The course will be taught trough lectures and seminars. The language of instruction is Swedish, English or Arabic, depending on group constellation.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
Prerequisites
- General entry requirements. No knowledge of Swedish is required
Other Information
Students who do not fulfill the formal prerequisites, but who has proficiency in Arabic which at least correponds to level 3 at Swedish high school, will have the opportunity to take a test to prove their comptence in the language.
