Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • write and pronounce the Arabic alphabet as well as understand how the diacritic marks (al-harakaat) affect the pronunciation of certain vowels and consonants
  • communicate in standard Arabic about familiar subjects
  • read and write simple texts about familiar topics
  • use basic Arabic grammar correctly
  • explain basic grammatical constructions with correct terms
  • reflect on their learning with reference to current research
  • evaluate the use of machine-translation tools in their learning of Arabic.

Course Content

The course does not require previous knowledge of Arabic. The course has two modules: language proficiency 1 and language proficiency 2. Language proficiency elements such as grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking are integrated into both modules. In language proficiency 1, students are introduced to the Arabic alphabet and writing system. Students read basic texts in Arabic and write short texts in Arabic. Language proficiency 2 builds on the skills students acquired in module 1. Students engage in structured and free writing practice as well as further training in pronunciation and listening comprehension. In both module 1 and 2, students reflects on their learning with reference to current research, and they work critically with machine-translation tools.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.

For a grade of VG for the whole course, students must achieve a VG for at least 10 credits.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Language Proficiency 1 - 5 Credits | U–VG
  • Language Proficiency 2 - 10 Credits | U–VG

This course overlaps previous course codes AR1001 and AR1018.

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
