Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • communicate in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) on familiar topics
  • read different types of short and simple texts in MSA and answer questions about these in MSA
  • use the correct terms to explain parts of Arabic grammar and the structure of the language and do so both orally and in writing
  • explain various aspects of the differences between MSA and the various Arabic dialects and link this to current research
  • in a general way, explain the development of Arabic with relevant research as a point of departure.

Course Content

The course consists of three modules. The module Language Proficiency 2 builds on the skills acquired in module Language Proficiency 1. During the course, students read texts with an increasing degree of difficulty and at the seminars, they discuss grammar, content and the structure of texts. Students use the vocabulary orally in role play and discussion. They complete written assignments and listening comprehension exercises that connect with every text. The third module, Introduction to the Arabic Language, is independent of the other two and requires that students read about the development of Arabic and the differences and similarities between Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and the various dialects.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.

To achieve the grade of VG for the whole course, students require VG in the modules Language Proficiency 1 and Language Proficiency 2.

To be able to receive the grade of VG, students must submit their assignments by the set deadline.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Language Proficiency 1 - 6 Credits | U–VG
  • Language Proficiency 2 - 6 Credits | U–VG
  • Introduction to the Arabic Language - 3 Credits | U–G

Prerequisites

  • Arabic I, 15 credits

Other Information

This course overlaps the previous course code AR1021 and the course Arabic for Beginners II, 15 credits.

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
