Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- discuss well-known and prepared subjects of different kinds in Modern Standard Arabic
- read and discuss short literary texts, poems and articles in MSA
- use correct terms to conduct simple grammatical analyses in MSA
- use correct terms to conduct simple literary analyses
- write short texts on well-known subjects in correct MSA
- distinguish specific traits in Syrian and Egyptian dialects in comparison with MSA and use basic linguistic terms to describe these
- use Arabic encyclopaedias, Arabic dictionaries and with the help of current research describe in brief how these have developed.
Course Content
The course consists of three modules. The module Language Proficiency 2 builds on the skills acquired in Language Proficiency 1. In both modules, students study various fictional texts, news and articles as well as short films and songs. Simple analytical terms are introduced in discussions about fictional texts. Students learn the basics of Arabic grammar
analysis and apply this to simple texts. They carry out a comparison between the Syrian/Egyptian dialects and MSA. The module Arabic Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias is taken on its own. Students study how Arabic dictionaries and encyclopaedias have developed and how they are used.

Grades
The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.
To achieve the grade of VG for the whole course, students require VG in the modules Language Proficiency 1 and Language Proficiency 2.
To be able to receive the grade of VG, students must submit their assignments by the set deadline.
Grades are reported as follows:
- Language Proficiency 1 - 6 Credits | U–VG
- Language Proficiency 2 - 6 Credits | U–VG
- Arabic Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias - 3 Credits | U–G

- Arabic II, 15 credits
Other Information
This course overlaps previous course codes AR1026 and AR1022.
This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
