Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- describe their detailed knowledge of Arabic grammar and syntax using the correct terms in Arabic, and use these orally and in writing
- conduct grammatical analyses in Arabic using the correct terms
- discuss Arabic syntax using the correct terms from linguistics
- in Modern Standard Arabic, discuss different kinds of texts, songs and films
- give short presentations in Modern Standard Arabic on various subjects
- explain the basics of a literary analysis with a point of departure in relevant theories
- explain the development of Arabic poetry with a point of departure in relevant research.
Course Content
The course consists of three modules. The modules Grammar and Texts and Oral Proficiency are taken together, and the module The Development of Arabic Poetry is taken on its own. The course covers various types of material, such as short stories, poems, articles and news as well as short films and reports. Students work with grammar and discuss syntax as part of their text study and also in independent grammatical analyses. Students also use the course material in the analysis of syntax. In the module The Development of Arabic Poetry, the role of poetry in Arabic society and the way it has changed over the centuries is studied in lectures and through the use of articles. Students then write a report on a defined subject.

Grades
The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.
To achieve the grade of VG for the whole course, students require VG in the modules Grammar and Text and Oral Proficiency.
To be able to receive the grade of VG, students must submit their assignments by the set deadline.
Grades are reported as follows:
- Grammar and Texts - 6 Credits | U–VG
- Oral Proficiency - 6 Credits | U–VG
- The Development of Arabic Poetry - 3 Credits | U–G
Entry Requirements
- Arabic III, 15 credits
Other Information
This course overlaps the previous course code AR1023.
This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
