Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • describe how basic concept-development methodology can be of value in a user-centred film development process
  • apply basic concept-development methodology for short films
  • describe how basic ethnographic methods can be of value in a user-centred film development process
  • perform a user and target group analysis by applying basic ethnographic methods
  • describe and apply the principles for project planning of short film productions
  • justify the content of standard contracts when writing contract proposals for commissioned film productions
  • write a project description that includes a production plan and budget
  • create a user-centred film prototype to present to a client
  • complete a project presentation that includes audiovisual media.

Course Content

This course is designed to equip students with a basic skill set in user-centred film development by integrating foundational concept-development methods with basic ethnographic methods; generative artificial intelligence media tools; fundamental aspects of project planning, budgeting, legal considerations, and basic ethical guidelines. The focus of the course is to create compelling short films tailored to specific user needs and preferences, as well as to prepare for presenting their prototypes to clients effectively. This course blends theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical exercises, in order to manage the complexities of short film production.

  • a group assignment of project documents
  • and oral and audiovisual presentations.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is A–F.

The Swedish grades A–F.

The full course grade will be weighted from the modules.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Concept-development methods - 4 Credits | A–F
  • Ethnographic research - 3 Credits | A–F
  • Project development - 2 Credits | A–F
  • Project description with budget and contracts - 3 Credits | A–F
  • Oral and audiovisual project presentation - 3 Credits | A–F

Entry Requirements

  • 30 credits in Media Production and English 6

Other Information

The language of instruction is English. Mandatory participation in seminars and workshops, and audiovisual presentations, is possible only during the times set for the course. No additional examination will be given after the end of the course. New opportunities for examination will be offered during the next course instance.

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
