Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • demonstrate a critical approach to different types of cultural texts as well as an understanding of the various messages and possible interpretations that these texts give rise to in different social and cultural contexts
  • demonstrate a basic knowledge of central cultural and literary theories and concepts as well as an ability to apply these concepts in critical analyses of primarily literature and film
  • orally and in writing communicate and argue for their own interpretation of cultural texts in light of various social and cultural contexts
  • independently write an academic paper, based on the guidelines given, which uses formatting conventions.

Course Content

The course consists of the study of a selection of contemporary cultural texts (in a wide sense) from the English-speaking world, such as fiction, film, TV, newspapers, advertisements, as well as other possible visual and textual media. The course also contains a selection of critical and theoretical texts which are used as starting points for the critical analyses.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is A–F.

The final grade for the course is based on an overall assessment by the examiner.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Seminars, Written Assignments, Academic Paper - 7.5 Credits | A–F

  • Literature in English 7.5 credits first cycle Level

Other Information

This course overlaps the previous course codes EN1018 and EN1092.

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement.
