Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • demonstrate a good understanding of common themes in popular literature in English
  • critically analyse popular literature in relation to common conventions of genre and a selection of basic ideas of contemporary literary theory
  • effectively communicate and argue for their interpretation of texts, orally and in writing
  • independently write an academic essay, based on the guidelines given, which uses formatting conventions.

Course Content

The course consists of a thematic study of a selection of contemporary texts from the English-speaking world. It includes texts from various genres within popular literature that are analysed and intepreted using relevant concepts from literary studies. In addition, a range of literary theories will be discussed to enhance the critical analyses. The course concludes with the independent writing of a literary analysis essay that addresses one or more of the concepts and themes explored in the course.

The grading scale used for the final course grade is A–F.

Entry Requirements

  • Literature in English, 6 hp. Exemption from Swedish can be given.

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
