Learning Outcomes
This course aims to develop students‘ knowledge of French literature and deepen their understanding of literary analysis and critical thinking.
On completion of the course, students shall, in French, be able to:
- discuss different genres and trends in French literary history from the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s
- understand, discuss and analyze a selection of novels, plays and poems from the 1600s to the 1800s through interpretation
- discuss central literary concepts and demonstrate the ability to use them in relevant contexts
- apply literary analysis, both orally and in writing, of poetry, drama and prose, and reflect on both form and content
- demonstrate the ability to independently complete a written work that meets basic literary requirements and reflect on the writing process
- critically use different forms of knowledge sources
- demonstrate independence in their studies.
Course Content
The course includes the study of French literature (novels, plays and poetry) from the 1600s to the 1800s. The course covers the history of literature and literary analysis techniques. The literature is examined in light of the historical and social development in France.
Assessment
Continuous assessment of active participation in seminars, oral presentations, written assignments and a final written examination.
Forms of Study
Lectures and obligatory seminars. The language of instruction is French.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
To achieve the grade VG for the whole course, VG is required in module 2.
Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Oral presentation - 2.5 cr
Module 2: Written presentation - 5 cr
Prerequisites
- French Written Proficiency I, 7.5 credits, French Oral Proficiency, 7.5 credits, French Literature I: From 1900 to the Present Day, 7.5 credits and French: Culture and Society I, 7.5 credits, first cycle. No knowledge of Swedish is required.
