Learning Outcomes
The course aims for students to develop skills in communicating verbally in French.
Upon completion of the course, students shall be able to:
- describe the most common terms in elementary phonetics
- explain the characteristics of French language sounds and the French prosody
- understand and use phonetic transcription (IPA)
- understand proper spoken French
- communicate verbally in everyday contexts with an acceptable pronunciation
- demonstrate basic knowledge of presentation techniques and apply it in verbal presentations
- show independence in their studies and reflect on their own learning.
Course Content
The course contains a review of the main features of French phonetics and practical pronunciation exercises. The course also includes varied exercises in understanding spoken French and communicating verbally in different situations. The students will also plan and carry out structured verbal presentations.
Assessment
A written piece of work in phonetics as well as continuous examination through assignments and oral presentations.
Forms of Study
Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars where the student is expected to participate actively. Teaching is in French.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
To obtain the grade of VG for the whole course, VG is required on at least 4.5 credits.
Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Phonetics - 3 cr
Module 2: Oral proficiency – 4.5 cr
Prerequisites
- General entry requirements and French 3, English 6. No knowledge of Swedish is required
