Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • describe the main features of the history and development of linguistic, in particular French linguistics
  • explain some aspects of linguistic theories and methods
  • explain and apply basic concepts of general and French linguistics
  • in French, write a short academic text in accordance with established academic conventions
  • demonstrate good linguistic competence in French both orally and in writing
  • relate critically to knowledge sources.

Course Content

The course provides an introduction to both general linguistics and French linguistics. The course also provides an introduction to academic writing in French. Students write a short academic text in French and critically review a text written by another student.

  • Written supervised online examination

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.

For a final course grade of VG, students must achieve VG in both modules.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Concepts and Theories in Linguistics - 3.5 Credits | U–VG
  • Academic Writing - 4 Credits | U–VG

Entry Requirements

  • 25 credits within the main field of study French, including French: Written Language Proficiency I, 7.5 credits and French I: Oral Language Proficiency, 7.5 credits. Exemption from Swedish can be given.

Other Information

This course overlaps previous course codes GFR27Q and GFR26T and the courses French: Academic Writing, 7.5 credits and French: Introduction to Linguistics, 7.5 credits.

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
