Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will, at a basic level, be able to:

  • apply relevant biomechanical principles that enable and limit climbing-specific movements.
  • analyze and provide feedback on technical skills based on biomechanical principles.
  • design climbing routes/problems focused on the development of specific movement skills.
  • explain and apply training methods that promote movement optimisation.

Course Content

This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of applied biomechanics and its practical application in climbing training. Skills in routesetting will be developed as a facilitative tool to understand and target specific technical skills.

During the course, sessions including climbing, routesetting, video analyses, case studies and discussions will be integrated to ensure students can apply biomechanical principles in coaching practice. Emphasis will be placed on enhancing technique, movement efficiency and injury prevention strategies in climbing.

Assessment

  • Individual written assignment.
  • Individual or group project work - Demonstration of practical competence and documented portfolio. This can be undertaken at any suitable accessible location.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–G.

Grades are reported as follows:
