Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • describe how scientific approaches govern method awareness and choice of methods
  • describe research strategies and methods
  • describe ethical aspects of research

Skills and Abilities

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • formulate the background, problems, issues and purpose relating to a scientific study
  • present a scientific report
  • use IT tools for the collection, processing, analysis and presentation of data
  • search among sources of information and critically review sources and evaluate information
  • explain their choice of research strategy and methods in relation to a scientific investigation

Judgement and Approach

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • evaluate the choice of scientific strategies and methods
  • critically review a scientific report

Course Content

The course deals with how scientific studies are structured, carried out, presented and valued. Central to that context are treated concepts such as scientific approach, research strategy, method, quantitative and qualitative studies, mixed research, reliability, validity, accuracy, precision, repetition, reproducibility, theoretical framework, etc. The course also deals with how ethical considerations are made in research contexts.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Quiz - 2 Credits | U–G
  • Laboratories - 1.5 Credits | U–G
  • Continuous examination in seminar series - 1 Credit | U–G
  • Project - 3 Credits | U–VG

Prerequisites

  • Data and Information Management, 15 credits or Entrepreneurship - Conditions and Distinctive Characters, 7 credits or Introduction to IT and Digital Services, 7.5 credits or Industrial Management - Basic Overview Course, 7.5 credits

Other Information

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
