Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students shall be able to:

  • describe and analyse Italian literature from the 18th,19th and 20th centuries as well as its most important authors and literary movements
  • analyse, present and discuss, in spoken Italian, the contents of a selection of representative literary works, and identify their typical features
  • reflect upon the chosen literary works and place them both in a literary and cultural context, as well as in a broader comparative European perspective
  • write a short essay in Italian in which they present an analysis of literary works and thereby use established literary concepts.

Course Content

The course contains an orientation in the Italian literary history of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries by studying the most central works, authors and literary movements of these periods. In the course, students practice to understand and analyse, orally and in writing, Italian literary works.

Assessment

The course is examined through continuous assessment of activity in seminars, a short essay and a final written exam.

Forms of Study

Obligatory seminars in which students shall participate actively and interact with their fellow students. The language of instruction is Italian.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To achieve the grade of VG for the whole course, VG is required for modules 1 and 3.

Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Active participation in seminars - 2 cr
Module 2: Short essay - 2 cr
Module 3: Final written exam - 3.5 cr

  • Italian A: Phonetics and Oral Proficiency, 7.5 credits, Italian A: Grammar and Written Proficiency, 7.5 credits and one of the Italian A: Text Analysis courses, 7.5 credits

Other Information

Teaching is web-based using learning platforms and digital tools. Students require access to a computer with a sound card and internet connection, a headset with microphone and headphones, as well as an external web-cam.
