Learning Outcomes

The overall objective of the course is for students to acquire knowledge of how life in Italy around the Second World War is portrayed in fiction.
On completion of the course, students will, in Italian, be able to:

  • discuss and compare, orally and in writing, a selection of fictional texts
  • explain words and expressions from a selection of fictional texts
  • conduct simple analyses of fictional texts while applying basic literary concepts
  • explain the social, historical, geographical and cultural circumstances described in a selection of fictional texts.

Course Content

The course comprises the study and analysis of selected fictional works that portray life and the social conditions during an important historical period for Italian and European society: the 1930s and 1940s. The course introduces basic literary concepts and how they can be applied to fictional texts.

  • Active participation in seminars
  • Written assignments

Forms of Study

Obligatory seminars in which students must participate actively and interact with their fellow students. The language of instruction is Italian.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To achieve the grade of VG for the whole course, students must achieve VG in both modules.


Reporting of grades:
  • Active Participation in Seminars - 3 cr
  • Written Assignments - 4.5 cr

Prerequisites

  • General entry requirements and Italian 3. No knowledge of Swedish is required
