Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • give an account of the outline of the main featuers in the history and development of Japanese haiku
  • explain and problematise the main concepts of haiku poetry
  • evaluate different interpretations of haiku and thereby express their own interpretations
  • argue for their independent perspectives on haiku-related theoretical and literary texts
  • write simple haiku in a way that complies with the genre‘s conventions.

Course Content

The course offers an overview of Japanese haiku poetry, its history and main concepts. Students read, analyse and interpret a large number of both modern as well as classical poems. To put these in a historical and cultural context, literary and theoretical texts on haiku and haiku aesthetics are read and discussed. In addition, students practice the art of writing haiku poetics.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is A–F.

The final grade for the course is based on an overall assessment by the examiner.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Classical Haiku - 5 Credits | A–F
  • Modern and Contemporary Haiku - 5 Credits | A–F
  • Creative Writing - 5 Credits | A–F

Prerequisites

  • Japanese III: Language Proficiency, 15 credits, Japanese III: The Modern Short Story, 7.5 credits and Japanese III: Reading Manga, 7.5 credits

The language of instruction is Japanese, with English used when required.

This course overlaps previous course code GJP23V.

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
