Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- describe the structure of a standard thesis format
- conduct literature search for themes related to Japan
- make a coherent and logical argument using appropriate sources
- use academic language in writing
- use formal documentation standards in both reference lists and in-text citations.
Course Content
The course covers the basic skills of academic writing in English on topics related to Japan, including various exercises on different aspects of academic writing and on the use of the formalities of essay writing.

- Constructive participation in seminars
- Oral presentation
Grades
The grading scale used for the final course grade is A–F.
Grades are reported as follows:
- Introduction to Academic Writing - 7.5 Credits | A–F
Entry Requirements
- General entry requirements and English 6. Exemption from Swedish can be given.
Other Information
This course overlaps the courses Japanese: Academic Writing, 7.5 credits and Japanese II: Academic Writing, 7.5 credits.
This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
