Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students shall be able to:
- recognise approximately 300 Chinese characters, Hanzi, used in standardised Chinese, and write about 100 of them
- analyse the structure of Hanzi
- use character dictionaries to widen their character vocabulary
- give an outline of the history of the characters and their development
- read and understand simple sentences in Chinese.
Course Content
The course comprises five parts that each build on each other. The seminars consist mainly of different exercises working with the characters. Students write the characters by hand and on the computer, and practice reading simple texts that are written with Chinese characters (Hanzi). In addition, students practice using character dictionaries.
Assessment
Continuous assessment of active participation in seminars and written assignments, as well as a final written exam.
Forms of Study
English is used as the language of tuition, with Chinese or Swedish as support languages. Teaching is done in the form of obligatory seminars.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
To achieve the grade of VG for the whole course, VG is required in at least 6 credits, including module 5.

Module 1: Chinese Characters, part 1 - 1.5 cr
Module 2: Chinese Characters, part 2 - 1.5 cr
Module 3: Chinese Characters, part 3 - 1.5 cr
Module 4: Chinese Characters, part 4 - 1.5 cr
Module 5: Written Examination - 1.5 cr

- General entry requirements and English 6. No knowledge of Swedish is required
