Learning Outcomes
This course aims to help students both reinforce what they have acquired in lower level Chinese courses, and continue to expand their Chinese proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- communicate comfortably and confidently in authentic situations
- express their thoughts on daily subjects and use some simple specialist terminology from different academic areas
- understand fairly complex Chinese sentences and paragraphs
- write short compositions using Chinese characters
- read and study partly simplified authentic Chinese texts.
Course Content
The course consists of two modules:
1. Speaking and Listening: In this module there are speaking/listening exercises such as sentence pattern drills, group activities and role play, dictations, listening comprehension, and pronunciation drills, that help the students develop their communicative abilities in Chinese.
2. Reading and Writing: In this module the students continue developing their reading skills and their ability to write short compositions in Chinese. They also acquire a greater Chinese vocabulary through exposure to a wide selection of Chinese texts.
Assessment
The two modules of the course are assessed separately. The two modules are assessed continuously, both orally and in writing, as well as with a final examination. For the Speaking and listening module, a final oral examination will be used to evaluate the students’ development during the course. For the Reading and writing part, a final written examination is used where the student writes an essay. The final examinations in the two modules serve as a complement to the students‘ other assignments, as does attendance.
