Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- systematically explain a selected research area within Chinese literature, linguistics, cultural studies, Chinese society or learning/teaching Chinese as a foreign language
- define a question within the selected research area
- design a study plan that can be completed independently within a set timeframe
- carry out a study with an appropriate choice of research method and theoretical application
- present and argue for their results in writing using correct academic language
- complete a thesis, in Chinese or English, using correct formalities
- present and argue for their study at a high level of communicative competence
- provide constructive criticism on the work of others and deal with the constructive criticism of others in an objective manner.
Course Content
The course consists of an individual project relating to Chinese literature, linguistics, cultural studies, Chinese society or learning/teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Students are taught how to conduct research, and they will independently write a thesis in accordance with academic formalia. The thesis is to be written in Chinese and be 4000 to 6000 characters in length. Alternatively, students may write their thesis in English upon permission from the examiner, in which case it must be 5000 to 6000 words in length. The completed thesis will be defended at an examining seminar.
Assessment
Students are examined by way of assessment of their active participation in seminars, a degree project in the form of a scientific essay and oral presentation and public examination of their own work and the work of another student.
Forms of Study
Obligatory seminars and individual supervision. Chinese is the language of instruction and the secondary langauge is English.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
To achieve the grade of VG for the whole course, students require VG in module 3 and module 4.

Module 1: Problem Formulation - 1.5 cr (U-G)
Module 2: Research Proposal - 1.5 cr (U-G)
Module 3: Thesis - 9 cr (U-VG)
Module 4: Oral Presentation, Defense and Peer Review - 3 cr (U-VG)
Prerequisites
- 165 credits at First Cycle, of which 90 credits within the Main field of study of Chinese, including the courses Chinese in Speech and Writing IV, 15 credits and Languages, Literature and Culture: Research Methodology and Academic Writing, 7.5 credits and three of the following courses: Chinese Modern Literature I, 7.5 credits; Chinese Linguistics, 7.5 credits; Chinese Traditional Philosophy, 7.5 credits; Chinese: Chinese Society, 7.5 credits
