Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students shall be able to:
- describe the main periods of Russian film history from the 1980s to the present day
- describe major names and genres from Russian cinema during the various periods
- analyse a selection of Russian films, their historical meaning and their cultural influence during the various periods
- discuss how main epochs of late Soviet and post-Soviet history are reflected in Russian cinema.
Course Content
The course discusses important works in Russian cinema from the 1980s to the present day in relation to changes in society. The periods covered are the late Soviet period, including Perestroika, the first post-Soviet decade, and the Putin era. Selected films are discussed from cultural, historical, and ideological points of view. The course highlights and discusses how Russian cinema reflects and depicts societal and political development as well as the place of cinema in Russian society. In the course, students practice how to write academic papers.
Assessment
Continuous assessment of active participation in seminars and a short written paper.
Forms of Study
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
To achieve the grade of VG in the whole course, students must achieve VG in module 1.
Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Active Participation in Seminars - 5 cr
Module 2: Paper - 2.5 cr

- Introduction to Russian Cinema 1, 7.5 credits at First Cycle, with 5 credits passed at time of registration
