Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- explain and analyse the difference between folklore and popular and mass culture, and present the content and history of folklore
- describe central genres and figures in Russian folklore
- analyse rituals and their development over time
- describe and discuss the relationship between traditional Slavic beliefs and Christianity
- explain and analyse the scholarly tradition in terms of Slavic folklore and the connection between folk memory and other cultural traditions.
Course Content
The course deals with Russian folklore, its most important genres, characters and motifs and the development of these over time. Students read a selection of texts in translation which are discussed from a sccholarly perspective. The course includes the study of the relationship between folklore and modern popular culture, as well as traditional rituals and the reflection of these in contemporary Russian culture and everyday life. The course also deals with the relationship between Slavic pagan beliefs and the Christian faith. In addition the course introduces the scholarly traditions relating to Slavic folklore.
Assessment
Continuous assessment based on active participation in seminars as well as an essay.
Forms of Study
Students are taught in obligatory seminars. The language of instruction is English.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
To achieve the final grade of VG, students must achieve a VG in module 1.
Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Seminars - 7.5 cr
Module 2: Essay - 2.5 cr

- General entry requirements. No knowledge of Swedish is required
