Learning Outcomes
The outcomes of the course are organised into modules.
Modules
On completion of the module, students will be able to:
- communicate orally and in writing in a way that has been adapted to the situation and the recipient
- express opinions and argue orally and in writing based on good listening comprehension and reading comprehension
- apply the Swedish stress and quantity system and use the phonemes and assimilations of Swedish in a satisfactory way
- read and analyse fiction and non-fiction from several familiar genres
- write texts in accordance with the basic norms of writing in several familiar genres
- reflect on the form, content, and structure of written Swedish
- use various tools when seeking knowledge and evaluate and take a position on information from various sources and media.
On completion of the module, students will be able to:
- communicate orally and in writing in a way that has been adapted to the situation and recipient, and understand differences in people’s language use in different contexts
- explain and argue for their positions with relevant and substantiated arguments in speech and writing
- apply the Swedish stress and quantity system in a satisfactory way and use the phonemes and assimilations of Swedish in a clear way
- read and analyse fiction from different eras and different parts of the world
- read and analyse non-fiction from several genres
- write texts in accordance with the basic norms of written language in several genres, and adapt the language according to purpose, content, recipient, and norms
- reflect on form, content, structure, and language use in written Swedish
- use various tools when seeking knowledge and evaluate and take a position on information from different sources and media while adopting a source-critical approach.
Course Content
The course, which has a communicative and linguistic focus, is organised into two modules. During the course, students specialise in Swedish grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
Modules
In this module, students read and discuss both fiction and non-fiction. They write texts in different genres. They reflect on the language and content of their texts and the texts of others, and they learn how to position themselves in relation to different media and sources in their search for knowledge. The module includes oral and written communication with a focus on adapting to the situation and recipient. Students are given great opportunity to demonstrate their ability to express their opinions and argue on a subject.
This module includes in-depth work with fiction and non-fiction text that students read and analyse. They write texts in several genres. They reflect on the language and content of their texts and the texts of others, and they learn how to adopt a source-critical perspective to evaluate different sources. Students gain more practice in oral and witten argumentation on their different standpoints.

- Individual oral presentations
- Individual written assignments
- Supervised written individual exam at a location or online
Grades
The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.
To receive the grade VG (Pass with Credit) for the entire course, students must receive a VG on all modules.
Grades are reported as follows:
- Oral language proficiency 1 - 3 Credits | U–VG
- Written language proficiency 1 - 4.5 Credits | U–VG
- Oral language proficiency 2 - 3 Credits | U–VG
- Written language proficiency 2 - 4.5 Credits | U–VG
Entry Requirements
- Basic Swedish as a second language IV (level CEFR B1.2), 7.5 credits
Other Information
This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
