Learning Outcomes
The aim of the course is for students to develop basic skills in speaking and understanding German. Students will also acquire basic knowledge of culture and society in German-speaking countries.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- interact in spoken German in different contexts
- compare history, geography and social life in German-speaking countries and relate these to their own experiences as well as reflect on cultural issues
- give and consider shorter oral and written presentations on current topics, and use different presentation methods
- comment on and discuss the content and language of different German-language films.
Course Content
The course includes exercises in understanding German speech and in communicating in German in different situations and on different subjects. Great importance is placed on actively practising vocabulary and phraseology related to everyday situations. The cultural element includes a general introduction to the history, geography and social life of German-speaking countries. By examining and discussing current social issues, students further practise their spoken German. Cultural contrastive reflections are also made based on students‘ own cultural backgrounds.
Assessment
Continous assessment of active participation in seminars and written assignments.
Forms of Study
Lectures, obligatory seminars and group exercises. The language of instruction is German.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
To achieve the grade of VG for the whole course, students must achieve VG in all 5 credits.
Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Oral Language Proficiency - 2 cr
Module 2: Culture Studies - 3 cr
Prerequisites
- General entry requirements and German 3. No knowledge of Swedish is required
Other Information
The course is aimed at exchange students who do not have knowledge of Swedish.
