Learning Outcomes
The overall goal of the course is for students to deepen their knowledge of the German language and about German-language literature and culture, while students prepare for a future profession as a language teacher. Another overall aim is that students develops independence in their studies and the ability to reflect on their own learning.
Modules
On completion of the module, students will be able to:
- express themselves orally without bothering grammatical or idiomatic errors and with linguistic variation around content taken from different areas
- use and adapt the language to different social, interest and professional contexts
- describe the modern history of the German-speaking countries and discuss current social issues
- reflect on culturally relevant concepts.
On completion of the module, students will be able to:
- present central grammatical concepts and be able to apply these in a critical evaluation of their own and others’ texts
- use and reflect on contrastive analysis and translation as a didactic method
- express themselves in writing without bothering grammatical errors and with some linguistic variation around content taken from different areas
- reflect contrastively on important stylistic features in different text types and be able to discover contrastively important similarities and differences between Swedish and German syntax.
On completion of the module, students will be able to:
- describe the structure and history of the German language and be able to theorise about the development of the German language
- identify contrastively important similarities and differences between Swedish and German
- apply basic skills in academic writing in an essay with a didactic focus.
On completion of the module, students will be able to:
- orally and in writing present literary analyses of poetry, drama and prose
- reflect on the literary history and culture of the German-speaking countries and be able to identify relevant issues
- discuss central literary genres and concepts.

Course Content

The course consists of four compulsory sub-courses:
Part course 1. Oral language skills and cultural knowledge II, 6 credits
Part course 2. Written language proficiency II, 6 credits
Module 3. Language and cultural history with academic writing, 6 credits
Module 4. German-language literature and literary history, 6 credits
The students then read one of the four didactic sub-courses:
Module 5. Language didactics 1A, 6 credits
Module 6. Language didactics 1B, 6 credits
Module 7. Language Didactics 2A, 6 credits
Module 8. Language didactics 2B, 6 credits
The sub-courses Language Didactics 1 and Language Didactics 2 can be read in any order. They are normally given once a year. Students who have already read Language Didactics 1 read Language Didactics 2 and vice versa.
Students who study German as their first subject AND students who have studied a subject other than language as their first subject study module 5, Language Didactics 1A or module 7, Language Didactics 2A.
Students who have studied another language as their first subject study module 6, Language Didactics 1B or module 8, Language Didactics 2B.
Modules
In the sub-course, great emphasis is placed on training one’s own linguistic production. Emphasis is placed on practicing an active vocabulary. In the sub-course, the culture and social life of the German-speaking countries are discussed, based on texts central to the sub-course.
The sub-course includes an in-depth study of German grammar with a focus on written text production as well as an in-depth study of contrastive analysis and translation as didactic tools. The sub-course consists of two knowledge areas, modern German syntax with subject didactics and language use in theory and practice. In syntax, the emphasis is on the theoretical reflection on central grammatical concepts and on the analysis of contrastively important differences between German and Swedish. Subject didactically, the focus is primarily on discussion of the application of contrastive methods for different age groups. In language use, written text production is practiced through translation from Swedish to German and reflection is made on translation as a didactic tool from a subject historical perspective.
The sub-course covers two areas of knowledge, the first of which, language and cultural history, focuses on the main features of language development from Germanic to modern German. Representative texts from each time period are studied both from a phonetic, syntactic and cultural-historical point of view. In the second area, a smaller essay is written with a didactic focus on language or literature. Within the framework of the essay work, skills in academic writing are practiced.
The module contains an overview of German-language literature from the Enlightenment onwards. Representative literary works are read and analyzed with respect to time-bound, stylistically typical features. Furthermore, how literature can be applied in teaching is discussed.

Grades
The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.
For a final course grade of VG, students must achieve VG for a minimum of 18 credits.

- German I for Teacher Education Students, 22.5 credits, including the modules Written Language Proficiency I, 6 credits and Language Learning and Teaching, 6 credits
Other Information
This course overlaps previous course code GTY2GY.
Module 4 can be replaced with the course Children‘s and Young Adult Literature in German.
The course includes two to three field days at a primary or secondary school.
This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
